For the past seven years, one of the social events that [livejournal.com profile] patgreene and I have hosted has been an annual ice skating party, typically held on a Sunday late afternoon in winter after the holiday rush is over. We like the idea because Kevin and I are active skaters and most of the rest of our household skates, and because we don't have to clean the house beforehand ;-). Typically we have covered the admissions and skate rentals for attendees who RSVP in advance.

This will be a kid-friendly event at the outdoor rink at the Winter Lodge in Palo Alto. This year, we're going on Sunday, February 22, from 3-5pm. We'll bring cocoa and [livejournal.com profile] patgreene's brownies. Anyone care to join us? See http://www.winterlodge.com for directions.

We could have held it in your honor! Alas... ;-)

Wish you could make it, and have a happy birthday in any case!

This sounds fun.. have put this on our calendar. Providing we're still in the area (highly likely), I'd love to go!

Looking forward to seeing you both. :) Although hopefully as well before then.

Looking forward to it, as always!

Do you want me to cross-post a link to this skating party announcement in my own LJ?

From: [identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com
Sure... I'll probably post a link on the HW list as well?

If I'm in the area, which is at least a 50-50 shot (and I'll have a better idea by the end of this month, if not sooner), I'd like to go. I don't know if my knees can handle skating, but I'll probably give it a try! I put myself as a 'maybe' on the poll.

In case you haven't seen the subsequent announcement, the skating party has been canceled due to weather, and rescheduled to March 22nd from 5:30-7:30. Please let us know that you saw this? Thanks...

One child has a play, we all have church and later in the evening a standing engagement so we won't be able to join you. Have fun.

What fun!

I was a skating princess as a wee lass, but I doubt my muscles will have any memory of how to do it. If anyone if up for lessons beforehand that let me know!

Wednesday evenings are reserved for adult-only skating at the rink in Palo Alto. I have a class there that meets from 9:15-10pm, but have in the past arrived sooner to skate with friends or sweeties (opens at 8pm). If you're interested, I'd be happy to go beforehand, sometime. :)

What level is the 9:15 class?

Date: 2009-01-19 11:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com
9:15 is the adult "freestyle" class, working on jumps and spins and footwork, starting with waltz jumps, half-flip jumps, and two-footed spins. The more advanced skaters in the class may be working on axels, camel spins or double jumps while those of us in the lower levels work at the same time on easier maneuvers. We get a fair share of "haven't skated in years, but used to do X or Y" re-entry skaters.

From 8:30-9:15 is the adult basic class, which starts with stroking, crossovers, forward edges, 3-turns, up to bunny hops. It is geared more towards have-never-skated adults, or initial crossovers from roller-blading.

Maybe I should start off with a regular skating session just to make sure I'm not in such poor shape that I'll pull a muscle.

Thanks to you, Geri, and Pat for including us, but we're singing for the ministers' installation at our church slap-dab in the middle of you skating window.

Shame - I really do enjoy skating when my knee is up for it.

please keep us in mind for future active social events like this!

lol. Certainly. Put me down as up for some light geocaching/hiking type stuff too, to fill in the schedule between now and then, hey?

I haven't yet but have been interested in trying it for awhile. And at this point, whatever gets me out of the house and moving is a benefit and a blessing.

Must remember to ping Geri separately.

Consider me pinged :-) I'd be delighted to take you caching sometime! What is your schedule like these days?

From: [identity profile] labelleizzy.livejournal.com
at the moment? *sigh* I have to complete paperwork for a couple of substitute teacher sign ups... better get on that...

but if I'm not substituting I'm going to be available during days sometimes... don't know so much about evenings... social schedule is shifting. Friday night and Saturday mornings are no, since that's my Waldorf classes.

Feel free to ping me a couple days in advance if you're going to head out, and I'll see what schedule looks like. I like spontaneous outings.

will send you my phone number under separate cover.

I'm often available daytimes. Let me know what some upcoming ones are for you - not this week 'cause it's getting close to booked, but perhaps the week or so after - and we can plan something.

In case you haven't seen the subsequent announcement, the skating party has been canceled due to weather, and rescheduled to March 22nd from 5:30-7:30. I won't actually be there, due to travels, but you and D would still be most welcomed to attend. Please let us know that you saw this, so that we don't worry that you folks are headed over there? Thanks...

It seems like I'm always turning down yours and Geri's invitations, so sorry! It's not that I don't like you, I certainly do! This time I am suffering from a one-two punch of flu and a nasty pharyngitis to be determined shortly by the Dr's lab. I have a feeling no one wants to share this with me.

Please do enjoy your skating and give yourself, Geri and Pat big ((hugs)) from me.
