Travel plans
Sep. 9th, 2003 12:43 amI'm headed to Spain in a couple of weeks, to a Mars-analog site for drilling (scientific study) and testing prototype hardware and software. And there's a set of lectures being offered from the field at Rio Tinto to remote students (late secondary, early university) on three continents, some taking it for credit (my lecture, on robotic drilling, is on 10/8 ;).
Travel itinerary:
28 Sept (Sunday)
CO 510 dp. SFO 6:30am arr. IAH 12:18pm
CO 458 dp. IAH 1:25pm arr DCA 5:30pm
overnight in Tyson's Corner, VA; hopefully see
geekchick, possibly others at dinner
29 Sept (Mon)
meeting in McLean with various Federal agencies on air traffic work, give talk, go to airport
CO1013 dp. DCA 4:30pm arr Newark 5:30pm
(rendezvous with Dave and Nancy in Newark airport, traveling together)
CO 62 dp. EWR 8:10pm arr Madrid 9:25am (30 Sept)
30 Sept (Tue)
get rental car, receive stick-shift lessons from Nancy, wander around Madrid, stay overnight
1 October (Wed)
Drive with Nancy and Dave from Madrid to Rio Tinto field site, near Nerva, Huelva. Start work, work through any backlog accumulated since
hopeforyou left on the previous Sunday.
2-3 October
Work in field, drilling core analysis and schlepping...
(Nancy and Dave play tourist in Andalusia while I'm working)
4-5 October
Weekend plans TBD, may visit Portugal or Tangiers or drive around southern Spain. Strangely, the drilling equipment contractor in Spain only works 5 days/week... I'm used to field work being on 18 hour/7day schedules. So we'll actually get weekends off...
6 October
Work in field
7 October (Tue)
Early am drive back to Madrid; drop off Nancy and Dave at airport; meet
hopeforyou at airport; visit Astrobiology Institute labs; overnight in Madrid.
8 October (Wed)
Drop off
hopeforyou at airport; return to Rio Tinto field site; give remote-science course lecture at 1600 local time.
9-16 October
Field work at Rio Tinto site. Hopefully the (Ph=1.0) acid water and mud won't have eaten holes in my pants...
11-12 October
Weekend, plans TBD.
16 October (Thur)
Drive back to Madrid, stay overnight
17 October (Friday)
CO 63 dp. Madrid 11:35am arr EWR 1:30pm
CO 41 dp. EWR 3:45pm arr SFO 6:47pm
I'll have 3 nights in Madrid (two with friends nearby) -- any suggestions are welcomed. As well as suggested places for weekend side-trips, accessible by rental car (although I might consider a cheap flight if the schedule was favorable).
