Controlling... aircraft

I've been working this afternoon on schedules and plans for a new air traffic control project -- the one with the pushy outside consultant (JL). It's part of a larger new program called "Transforming the National Airspace System (TNAS)". No one likes this acronym, and higher-ups want something different. The leading candidate: "Project Janus". They're thinking in terms of looking forward and backward. I keep thinking of the local leather support group that goes by the same name, and have to keep stifling giggles in meetings...

Well, it is about control, now, isn't it? *weg*

It's pretty bad using either name. "TNAS" could be plural for "TNA" or "Tits and Ass". Janus has its own issues. I recommend TMHC, if you can figure out how to apply "The Mile High Club". =P

It's good the drilling projects weren't named this -- you guys had a hard enough time keeping straight faces with all the talk of "dry-drilling".

Heh. Amusing, but even higher management would figure out that one...

(nods sagely) without lubrication... try saying that in a meeting with a straight face. Let alone discussing shafts, or sizes...

Believe me, it's an adventure dealing with that community... controllers, retired controllers, pilots, airlines, they all want to be in control. And not subject to anyone else's control. Every new technology is assessed by every party not in terms of productivity as much as in terms of how [new tool] changes the existing balance of power.

Arguably, this lack of cooperation is a primary cause of the US air traffic system lagging the rest of the Western world... they're still using Univac 8100s with analog sweep displays for terminal area control, for instance. 1970s technologies...

Not terribly unusual for any group of N > 2 people.

Sometimes not rare for a group of N = 2 people. *weg*

And here I thought it was because it was "mission-critical" technology that had to be functioning 24/7, without major glitches...and anything else would be Micro$haft-based. *weg*
