Dropping in and out
Apr. 6th, 2002 06:14 pmThe past few days, I've been immersed in a workshop for the Haughton-Mars Project. Presenting prior results, then yesterday and today planning our summer field season and future directions.
In yesterday's morning session on "Advanced Technology Testing for Mars Exploration," one of my authors (I was the session chair) kept disappearing and reappearing. I had to rearrange papers on the fly. It turns out that Carol had an abstract of hers, submitted to next week's Astrobiology conference, noticed by the media (the BBC, then hordes ). Discussing a couple of patches on Mars Pathfinder images that show spectra consistent with chlorophyll. But that doesn't mean that it *is* chlorophyll, necessarily, but the media are off to the races with another "Life on Mars" story. And Carol had to hide out in her office, letting Public Affairs handle the media ... hence her disappearances.
Then this morning, we met at a Denny's in Sunnyvale for breakfast to discuss logistics and plans for different Arctic investigations this summer, plus a Mars rover proposal for 2007. And Baruch Blumberg dropped in... head of the Astrobiology Institute, and a Nobel laureate (Hep-B vaccine). He was interested in the greenhouse going up this summer, as well as the space medicine studies, and may provide some grant funding.
This afternoon... two Little League games. And J called and apologized, so we're on speaking terms again :-). Her primary interceded on my behalf...
