Resolute

Back online again, looking out at the last midnight sun I'll see this year. It is far enough past the solstice, and the sun is now low enough, for the clouds and landscape to wear shades of cerise and olive and purple and pearl... like a prolonged three-hour sunset that never quite gets there. Pink sea ice in the harbor, outside the window of the conference room where there's a network port.

I left Devon Island today... a finished set of field tests in hand. We spent all day yesterday packing the camp, in cold rain.... my equipment went out in the afternoon, then we roamed around assisting others.

Today I left on the first Twin Otter at ten, then spent a few hours getting my equipment shipped, then ran shuttles to the airport to pick up other arrivals. The hotels are overflowing and we're doubled-up in every room.

After dinner, we had a final project party... lots of teasing, stories, and perspective. With lots of Scotch and snacks... it should be noted that [livejournal.com profile] sinboy hit a home run by suggesting the 14-year-old Oban single-malt. It was probably the favorite bottle in camp. Oz (who is from Scotland) had been there... and appreciated. Thanks, Josh!

And [livejournal.com profile] patgreene's suggestions and purchases of more, newer gloves and socks made the season much more comfortable, given the awful weather. She was right, I wasn't. And she has untiringly made this all possible by being willing to become a single parent for weeks at a time in the summer.

Tomorrow... repack clean clothes, loiter around Resolute, then off to Edmonton.
