To those of you who reside in the US... happy Thursday otherwise (grin).

Today I booked reservations for a couple of business trips for next month... 10-13 December to Houston (more automated drilling), and 17-21 December to DC (new project) and Atlanta (equipment handoff for old project). The latter trip is still unsettled, but we had to get all travel requests through 11 January in the mill by yesterday (NASA's annual budget hasn't been approved, so we're on a stopgap fractional authorization until then).

On the other hand, I'm going to get stuck with $130 in charges for some NASA gift items (hats and pins) that I bought at the gift shop and gave out last summer to a group of VIPs visiting our Arctic field camp. These were comprised of several ambassadors and environment ministers from various European countries, the UK and Canada. I had had two days' notice that I was going to be the NASA greeter, and did what I thought was in the Agency's best interests at that time...

And then I drove away with [personal profile] hopeforyou, first for a quick lunch at a local taqueria and thence to Fry's Electronics to buy the components for a small PC-based server, to be used in testing remote image-retrieval scripts and running LabView for drill control. L's roommate G joined us as a consultant. We wound up with the parts for what would be a top-line desktop system (2.6GHz P4 (i845), 512MB PC2700 DDR memory, a 120MB disk, DVD-ROM, floppy, Radeon video card, IR keyboard and mouse and a 17" Sony flat-panel display). Plus RedHat 8.0 and Win2K Server (two partitions). Pulling this together took about three hours, including arguing with various clerks over tax-exemption.

Most endearing moment: [livejournal.com profile] hopeforyou, frazzled after two hours in Fry's, murmuring about the merits of two nearly-identical Logicon IR wireless keyboard sets, one costing $80 and the other $100... sighing "But... but I'm not sure I think I'm worth a $100 keyboard!" I just wanted to hug her and assure her that she was certainly worth far more than the $20 difference...

Bleh. 10pm on Thanksgiving Day, and there's nothing to do. The kids and Pat are asleep. The dishwasher is loaded. I've telephoned all of my other sweeties already, and none of them have been online (since 9pm, at least). Whine, moan... four hours to burn somehow.
