In a memorandum dated December 9, 2003, the President has ordered
that all executive branch departments and agencies of the Federal
Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on
Friday, December 26, 2003, the day after Christmas Day.

Heh. I was taking a vacation day then anyway, driving to Florida from Atlanta. Most years we're excused a half-day early on Christmas Eve... I wonder if this is an election-year ploy by Bush.

I think it's just a recognition that nobody's coming in that day anyway, so why not go for a little goodwill?

Of course, this neglects the fact that people have already sweated over using vacation days, or making travel arrangements, and so they're already pissed off...

The Post article about it yesterday said that it's quite traditional for the president to give government employees a day off the day after Christmas when Christmas falls on a Thursday. So no, I don't think it's an election-year ploy, my cynical friend.
