Jumping the gun on Christmas, and inspired by the costumes at the Dickens Fair, I placed a couple of successful eBay bids and wound up with some new finery...

Here's the same make of dinner jacket, with white satin lapels:

And here's an example of my charcoal cutaway tailcoat, with striped trousers:

the coat goes halfway down my thighs, in back. Both will need alterations to fit well... to be let out in the back vertical seam. Otherwise, I'd be tempted to wear the dinner jacket on New Year's Eve...

Is the jacket in your possession already? If so, it's likely you could manage to get it altered in time for NYEve. That's still two weeks, and even with holiday time in there, it should be doable.

I have it in my closet, but I'm leaving for Atlanta on Sunday... three-day alterations would be difficult to find :-|.

Well, they might be possible. Is NY Eve in Atlanta? If not, ask for alterations here and pick up when you get back. If so, consider taking it with and getting it altered there. Do advance research through your family and possibly "make a reservation" with a tailor so they have you on their calendar.
