Explanations help put actions in context for me, which sometimes greatly alters my view of those actions. If someone's actions toward me are revealed to have been due to some unmentioned external circumstances, I'll quickly discount them (rather than taking it personally). Unless the circumstances mysteriously keep reappearing... "once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, three times is a hostile action."
