Because patgreene, dawnd, and sarahh have left Spain and he has to work alone and spend any free time by himself.

It's hard. I know, because I spent a week out there and I was at least in Madrid that whole time.

i understand that 3 folks brian cares for a lot just left and he feels lonely. However drinking will only intensify those feelings not make them go away.

Actually, it was after more pain than only being left here alone, it was after hours of other processing as well. I wanted to relax and numb my feelings, and it worked well on both counts :).
