A dreary start...
Rain, a large branch down in the backyard, late to work (took James to the dentist)... and then was in a traffic accident on the way back. I was driving down Middlefield in the left lane, and some guy just pulled out of an apartment complex's driveway, left into oncoming traffic. I hit the brakes, but it was wet... the guy pulling out of the driveway also had a fogged windshield and his car was plastered with leaves, so he probably couldn't see well, but he finally noticed and tried to stop, halfway across the 4-lane road... too late. Sigh. No one hurt, minor sheet metal and bumper damage on both cars. One more annoyance with insurance companies ahead...

That's what, four fender-benders in the past 12 months? (2 for Pat, now a second one for me) Sigh... a bad run.
And the weather isn't *that* bad... sheets of rain, at times, but it would be just an average thundershower in Virginia. Except that with no rain in five months, the streets have an oily film...

as for "not that bad", well, I drove to BART this morning-- only motivated in part by losing my umbrellas when I moved (or maybe didn't unpack them???) and owning a rain jacket but not a raincoat.

And, though it would only be an average thundershower in Virginia, that doesn't mean it would have been harmless -- I have a distinct memory of watching a pair of cars leaving a stoplight from twin left turn lanes after just such a storm. The car in the inner turn lane lost traction on the rear wheels, and just sort of slid sideways into the car in the outer lane. Nobody hurt, and only minor damage to the cars -- but lots of it, I'm sure.
Also, here in my part Mountain view, we had about 15 minutes of power blinks and outage, about 10am this morning.
