When a long-time friend (best man at my wedding) sends me an unsolicited link to yet another website demeaning Southerners... this time portraying an ostensible trailer-park beauty contest in Mississippi. Along with the fake buck-teeth sales. Grr. Just because I live in California nowadays doesn't mean that I've somehow become other than who and what I was when he met me... and he ought to know that that stuff annoys me, after this long. Shucks, that's probably *why* he sends me that stuff, just to get a rise...

Heh. If he keeps dissing Mississippi and making bad-teeth jokes, I ought to unleash a certain sweetie on Rob to wreak her fury... that'd make his hair curl even more.

Actually, I have been known on occasion to use the misconception to disarm someone that assumes my regional affiliations has an effect on my intelligence. (I know it is bad manners, but sometimes it it too tempting...)

someone who deliberately provokes you and insults your people doesn't seem to me to be much of a friend.

Would I be correct if I were to guess that Rob is from the east coast?

What can you expect from someone who insists on telling locals that they are pronouncing their streeet names wrong?

Ah, yes, the Sam Ervin "I'm just a country lawyer" approach... highly useful tactic, IMO it is often better to be initially underestimated or dismissed as of little consequence. Until the trap is sprung...

lots of hugs. When folks send me unsolicited email of that nature I write back and ask my 100% that they not do that. if the email continues then I dont read anything the person sends. Hugs T

I'm putting him on my "junk" filter as it is... since all but one of the emails I've received from him over the past year have been of the net.bad.humor variety. Sigh.

my variation on that is to ask the person what they are hoping to accomplish; if they reply, I can let them know what they are doing (annoying and/or insulting me), in the hopes that they will change their behavior, or, if they don't, I can know that they don't mind annoying or insulting me, so I'm better off not reading correspondence from them.
