(high-five)

Not only is there a gravity anomaly that correlates with the magnetic anomaly, but there's orange clayey soil everywhere... and I found gossan.(iron-bearing rock).

This was virgin, unexplored territory, too... no past visits. I have a large orange plain and a pretty canyon to name :).

Congrats. Here's to more good fortune.

Naming Things

Brian: Jimmy Doohan (a canadian) just died. How about "Doohan Planitia"? Or "Doohan Gorge"?

Let me try this again...

You going to name one of those after me? *silly grin*

I am so proud of you. I am so delighted that all your hard work and frustration is bearing fruit.

I was thinking when I read it that he should name one after you and one after Les :-)

I'm impressed... it isn't everyone who gets to name geography!

*grin* wh00t!

high-five

Good for you. Just a suggestion, but your dad would get a big kick out of having it named after him. I won't mention it to him then it will be a surprise if you decide to do it and not a disappointment if you don't.

Cool!

Question: do you have exact coordinates for your location(s)? I'm looking at the general area around 75d 22' N, 89d 41' W with Google Earth.

I initially read Jay's post as a "plain canyon to name" and a "pretty canyon to name", and while I think there is a naming convention that they follow that prevents him from choosing [livejournal.com profile] patgreene, me, or his dad, I didn't think it would be so good for him to figure out which of us is "pretty" and which of us is "plain".

I've since realized my error in reading, but I thought it was funny enough to share.

Are the anomalies because of the gossan? Is the gossan in huge, giant amounts?

Were you looking for this?

Yeah, I want to hear more about the sciencey aspects, whatever you're allowed to tell, of course.

Thanks! Now I'm waiting for crater interior access...

Generally, they have to be named after physical similarities or space exploration figures, or I would...

[identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com 2005-07-27 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
The area yesterday was bounded by roughly 75d 15-30m N, 90d 10-35m W... I have the exact coordinates, but they're in UTM NAD27...

[identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com 2005-07-27 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I had *no* idea what the gravity would look like, or a cause... a heavy, iron-bearing magnetized material like the gossan explains both the gravity and magnetic anomalies, if there's enough of it down there. :D

It's all unclassified... see the project's page also at http://www.marsonearth.com :)

I understand completely. Just a suggestion.
