When I worked on my senior environmental studies project (historical analysis of 8 south bay wet lands sites), I spent many hours pouring over topographic maps (from 1850s to 1997), cadastral maps, and aerial photos (from 1930s to 1997) to track the salt pond to landfill to wetland (or other) progression. Many hours were spent at the USGS Library in Menlo Park looking over those records in order to put together my report which would ultimately provide additional background material for the Burrowing Owl study my Professor was working on.
