Supposedly, if the bottom of the trunk is in front, then frontal drag is then forcing the branches into the luggage rack, rather than away from the rack. There's a fear that a facing-forward tree might suddenly pop open its branches, like a parachute... IMO, it doesn't really matter, as long as the tree is securely tied.
