Save the date - Washington's Birthday ice skating party, 2/22/09 3-5pm

For the past seven years, one of the social events that patgreene and I have hosted has been an annual ice skating party, typically held on a Sunday late afternoon in winter after the holiday rush is over. We like the idea because Kevin and I are active skaters and most of the rest of our household skates, and because we don't have to clean the house beforehand ;-). Typically we have covered the admissions and skate rentals for attendees who RSVP in advance.

This will be a kid-friendly event at the outdoor rink at the Winter Lodge in Palo Alto. This year, we're going on Sunday, February 22, from 3-5pm. We'll bring cocoa and patgreene's brownies. Anyone care to join us? See http://www.winterlodge.com for directions.

Wednesday evenings are reserved for adult-only skating at the rink in Palo Alto. I have a class there that meets from 9:15-10pm, but have in the past arrived sooner to skate with friends or sweeties (opens at 8pm). If you're interested, I'd be happy to go beforehand, sometime. :)

What level is the 9:15 class?

9:15 is the adult "freestyle" class, working on jumps and spins and footwork, starting with waltz jumps, half-flip jumps, and two-footed spins. The more advanced skaters in the class may be working on axels, camel spins or double jumps while those of us in the lower levels work at the same time on easier maneuvers. We get a fair share of "haven't skated in years, but used to do X or Y" re-entry skaters.

From 8:30-9:15 is the adult basic class, which starts with stroking, crossovers, forward edges, 3-turns, up to bunny hops. It is geared more towards have-never-skated adults, or initial crossovers from roller-blading.
