Oops, used a US-centric cultural reference... in US secondary schools (post-grammar), there are extracurricular activities that are school-sponsored, some of which (athletics, music, some kinds of academics) are competitive amongst local leagues of schools. If one is a regular player and deemed sufficiently meritorious, one earns a "letter", which is a cloth patch, typically with the school's initial and colors, that can be sewed on to a sweater or jacket. It's considered a mild honor.
