Originally, I tacked on the year of the French Revolution (I figured I'd be stirring up things periodically in a couple of mailing lists or alt.poly) when I was on AOL. It was camouflage... by looking like any other random AOL-generated-userid hapless newbie, I could say provocative things and get flamed less than if other people had known I'd been on Usenet since 1981.
Now I keep it purely for symbolism, and out of convenience ("brian-with-numbers").
