Regarding the style of including "evil" as a part of one's LJ name... having never gotten that particular joke, I find it to be a minor irritation. Past advice to me has been "if something online annoys or stresses you, don't read it." But I have no idea what I can reasonably do to avoid having to see this particular irritant in my inbox, coming from several others... other users can call themselves whatever they please, and it doesn't seem quite worth defriending and comment-banning the affected individuals. At least, the ones that I haven't already delisted for other reasons...

Yeah. I guess if it annoyed me much (beyond the very minor irritation I feel at not knowing which "evil" person is which), I would just shrug it off, because it doesn't feel like anything that really concerns me. I suppose you could use mail filters to send anything with "evil" in the From: line to the bit bin. :-)

That's a good idea, at least as far as auto-mailed LJ comments go... and it is less apparent, hopefully less offensive to the affected individual(s) than a comment ban.

To me, seeing "evil" in the from: field has a discussion-dampening, thread-ending effect... I'd probably be similarly disinclined if someone substituted, say, "nazi" for "evil" in their LJ handle.

Sure, I can see your point. To me, the "evil" feels clearly like a tongue-in-cheek injoke, so it doesn't bother me much, but I can see why it might bother you or others.

If you're referring to the specific usernames I believe you are (although I could of course be wrong), my observations would lead me to believe it's a particular in-joke. If you don't get the reference in my username, you obviously haven't been watching enough "Star Trek", Mr. Pop-Culture-Impaired. ;) If my username bothers you enough that you're going to filter it, I'd appreciate it if you'd at least tell me that's what's going on so that I don't have any expectations that you would have seen any of my comments in email.

Okay... I now have an "evil screening" rule for incoming email, which puts anything containing the word in its message body into the spam bucket (along with those containing words like "cash", "viagra" "enlarger", "XXX", etc.). I'll still see and respond to comments via the web interface, albeit with occasional lags. Fair enough?
