Great. I made the mistake of forwarding JL some email ten minutes ago while I was going through my inbox. Now he's calling me at home at 7:50am about something that I already know is non-critical.

I'm just eating my oatmeal and letting it ring...

Perhaps it's time to draw a line firmly with him regarding calling you at home during non-business hours (as in "don't do it unless something's on fire")?

If I do more project work for him, I'm going to end up firmly establishing my boundaries about this earlier on. I won't tolerate stalkeresque behaviour.

Agreed. There is NO WAY that 7:50am is an acceptable time to call someone at home, for anything less than "there's been a nuclear strike; don't come to the lab." Is there no way you can appeal to anyone who is HIS superior?
