Visiting a place periodically for me seems a bit like an LDR... intense, a short time spent in person, and the intervening absence makes small changes more readily apparent. Example: North Woods Hemp Shop "Alberta's Premier Cannabis Location" on a walk up Whyte Ave this morning. I remember walking past the shop on previous visits, but I don't remember them being quite as bold about their advertising. A small change, perhaps, but noticeable. Or liquor stores being privatised, likewise. And the local economy is doing well, a refreshing change from the gloom and unemployment at home.

When one is fond of the locale (as I have become of this place) the LDR analogy is even closer. But time to pack...

Nice to hear about your visit! Did you visit the Hemp Shop? On a sadder noted, did you see the after-effects of the fire?

(grin) they were closed, or I might have taken a look. Coming from the US, it seems strange to see it advertised so openly. Fire? I wasn't aware of it.

Fire? I wasn't aware of it.

The one in March on Whyte Avenue.

But hemp is such a useful material - even hemp seed is good to eat (rich in the essential fatty acid that most of us lack in our diet, known as 'omega 3'). The USA and UK are self-deprived of this by ignorance.

Fire? I wasn't aware of it.

Then you missed a very sad story: http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2003/03/14/edmonton030314

I can't find any stories on the re-building, however.

We didn't walk far enough east on Wednesday for you to see the empty lot where the fire was. We drove past it on the way to the hotel, but it didn't occur to me to point it out, I'm afraid. It's really only noticable by its absence now. Maybe when you come back.
