We went on a short train ride, picniced, then toured a mine...
Anyone remember the 1960s-70s TV program "Bonanza"? I never watched it or its reruns much, but I think it was set in Virginia City, Nevada. Home of 300 miles of underground tunnels, mining the famous Comstock Lode in the second half of the nineteenth century. We left Reno after buying picnic materials, headed to Virginia City. First we rode a train, covering just a few miles over part of the former Virginia and Truckee:

David is visible at the end of the last car, in blue.
Then after lunch, we joined a guided tour into the Chollar Mine, following a shaft penetrating 200m into the treasure within the core of Mt. Davidson...

Seeing pink and bluish rocks at the ore body, down inside. As shown by
patgreene's posture, it was tight and only 4-5 feet high in places. But cool and damp... she was unexpectedly claustrophobic. The kids had fun, and I had been in mines before (in Sudbury, a couple of years ago). The kids panned for gold and actually found a dozen flecks, perhaps .03 oz total.
Then we went by the Nevada State Railroad Museum, in Carson City... the capital city itself is unimpressive, although the new silver-domed assembly building was attractive.
