minor LJ annoyance

The algorithm used for tallying comments posted/received has been changed sometime over the past few months. One's responses to others' comments in one's own journal are now counted as both "posted" and "received", instead of only the former. This has had the unfortunate effect of suddenly inflating my "received" total, pushing it past the "posted" total.

So now it looks like I'm a net LJ drain, parasitically drawing in more inputs than I'm generating comments in return. A minor annoyance, granted, but I dislike looking like I'm not-pulling-my-weight online...

How interesting, that my response is usually mild embarassment/guilt that I write more comments than I receive, so I must not be very interesting!

Yes, I've usually seen the worry expressed that way round, too. Last time I looked my stats were biased more towards posting than receiving, but so far I've managed to shrug it off rather than worry about it :-)

That is interesting... a reaction that wouldn't have occurred to me. I don't expect anyone to find me particularly interesting, so I'm usually more concerned with reciprocity and balance issues.

Like you, I've received more than I've posted, but I suspect that my vignette challenges skew that massively.

You could always respond in seperate posts, and not in the original entry.

True... it wouldn't help the comments-posted number (since it would be a new entry) but at least then my responses wouldn't look like comments-received to myself!

FWIW, I've never even looked at that number in anyone's user info, including my own.

I don't think I've ever looked at those numbers on anyone else's user info page, and I think I've only looked at them on my own maybe once or twice in the course of seeing how many posts I'd made to my own journal.
