last weekend
Oct. 9th, 2003 12:25 amCatching up... I was done with work by noon on Saturday, so we (Dave and Nancy and I ) drove to Granada, via Cordoba.
We stopped for lunch in Cordoba... it has a cathedral converted from a mosque (mezquita), whose oldest part dates to AD 764.

The cathedral conversion in the 15th and 16th C. detracts from the architecture...
We arrived in Granada after dark, in the rain... and unlike Madrid, Granada has few street signs at intersections. We wandered for an hour, driving around trying to find the hotel. Once we arrived... I had messed up (reserving for a day later) but it worked out well -- they put us in a beautiful apartment across the street. After a nice dinner, we walked around Granada. A popular Saturday-night youth pastime was to bring cheap soft drinks and alcohol and stand in small groups around the cathedral...
On Sunday morning we walked around the old Moorish quarter of Granada, below the Alhambra. On our way to the chapel containing Ferdinand and Isabella's tombs, we were stopped temporarily while a processional went by:

For me, it was eerily reminiscent of the processional that I'd seen in Japan in May...
After checking out of the hotel, we took a cab to the Alhambra -- I'd made advance reservations, as recommended. It was beautiful and felt very lived-in... subtle architecture, simple lines with fractal-like complex repeating fine details on the surfaces.

I also noted a modern guest outside of Charles V's palace, sitting on a bench:

which struck me as an amusing juxtaposition, both temporally and culturally.
We drove back to Nerva afterwards, arriving back in time for dinner.
