Yes... it was a game, all about negotiation. But it was OK to say no, in many guises! And sometimes no meant maybe, and sometimes "yes, I'll give you 5 euros" really meant no (in the context of an expensive item. Very direct, in-your-face... and subtle and indirect, at the same time. And I never paid more than 25-30% of the original asking price (although I still arguably paid too much).
