Local females: want to become dizzy and possibly earn some cash? I have a suggestion:
Female participants between the ages of 18 and 46 years are needed for a Human Powered Centrifuge study at Ames Research Center. The study is scheduled to start January 15, 2004 and last approximately three weeks. Participation will require one-hour training sessions 5 days a week for three weeks. There will also be three two-hour familiarization and assessment periods, two of which may take place on weekends. The training and assessment times occur throughout the day and this allows some flexibility to accommodate subject schedules. The daily training sessions may require bicycle type exercise of approximately 40 minutes.
The goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of human cardiovascular function associated with space flight as well as everyday life. During space flight, cardiovascular changes occur in astronauts that may make their transition back to Earth activities difficult. The Human Powered Centrifuge is being considered as a tool to improve an astronaut's ability to transition between Earth and space environments. This study is the continuation of studies that began with an all male subject population. There is interest in determining the effectiveness of the Human Powered Centrifuge procedure for females.
The majority of tests and training will be conducted in Building 221A using the Human Powered Centrifuge and in the adjoining exercise laboratory. All testing will be conducted by qualified test equipment operators and certified medical personnel. Selected subjects may be hired as part-time, temporary employees. Candidates must currently be non-smokers in good health and not participating in an unusually rigorous exercise program. They should have no history of cardiovascular or musculoskeletal disease or hernia. Participants will be required to refrain from alcohol and caffeine consumption for a portion of the study. Blood and urine samples will be collected.
To find out more about this study please contact Elizabeth Hills at (650) 604-1702, or e-mail: Liz.Hills@nasa.gov. The deadline for application to be a test subject is 10/24/03.
[Note: this was just broadcast to staff today. I think that they lack subjects and are therefore holding the recruiting deadline open for another week --BJG]
