Thanksgiving day
Nov. 28th, 2003 12:16 pmWe were happy to be joined yesterday by
akienm,
dawnd and Allegra. Kevin had been eagerly awaiting the latter's arrival all week ;-). We had four adults and four kids together in my small house... it was a bit raucous at times :-). But the adults still had a chance to talk and reflect, and James took the other kids to the park after dinner. Dawn brought over a Victorian costuming book, and a vest that fit just right.
She and Akien brought mouth-explodingly good cranberry-orange sauce... it gave me tiny shivers :-). And pies... lovely fluffy pumpkin, with a browned-crust turkey cutout and meltingly delicious crust and whipped cream that she brought and beat here. (swoon) And I didn't even get to try her apple pie, full-crust with a maple-leaf center cutout.
And more than the food, it was good to just hang out with excellent folks --extended family -- and have a full house together. Spending more small-group time around
akienm was something that I'd wanted to do for awhile, too. And I learned a potentially useful parenting tip that Akien has used with Allegra. A day that reminded me of the many reasons I have to be thankful.
Earlier in the day, we had calls from my parents and from
geekchick (wish we could have had her over, too... ;). I had written a countdown checklist, a timeline indicating what things were to happen at what times leading up to the afternoon meal... it worked well, particularly when I had to hand-off cooking and cleaning to
patgreene at times. Our contributions turned out OK, although the rolls were a bit biscuit-like (old yeast, I think) and I lost the slivered almonds for the green beans. The turkey was moist, not dried-out, and the sweet potatoes and (James's) fruit salad were quite edible.
I'm happy to have a chance to share :-). It was a good day.
