Boxing Day off, this year

In a memorandum dated December 9, 2003, the President has ordered
that all executive branch departments and agencies of the Federal
Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on
Friday, December 26, 2003, the day after Christmas Day.

Heh. I was taking a vacation day then anyway, driving to Florida from Atlanta. Most years we're excused a half-day early on Christmas Eve... I wonder if this is an election-year ploy by Bush.

Nah -- he's sucking up to the Brits -- that's Boxing Day. :D

I think it's just a recognition that nobody's coming in that day anyway, so why not go for a little goodwill?

Of course, this neglects the fact that people have already sweated over using vacation days, or making travel arrangements, and so they're already pissed off...

It's a nice gesture... although you're right, there are actually some annoyed people with use-or-lose vacation who will be rejuggling their plans. I'm not one of them, I'll have drawn my leave totals down below 4 weeks (we can only carry over 4 weeks to the following year ;).

The Post article about it yesterday said that it's quite traditional for the president to give government employees a day off the day after Christmas when Christmas falls on a Thursday. So no, I don't think it's an election-year ploy, my cynical friend.

I'm grown suspicious of anything emanating from the top, under this administration... they also yesterday announced the first 200 "FAIR Act" outsourcings of previous NASA jobs.
