After dropping [personal profile] sarahh off at the airport, yesterday morning I joined a colleague (Pascal) who briefed a couple of NASA higher-ups (Gary Martin and John Grunsfeld)... it was good that I helped, as it gave the appearance of Ames support of Pascal's Mars-analog facility. As well as having someone who could verify claims that Pascal made, add details and relate the activity to other briefings they'd gotten (like the HORSE project results). Not merely supportive, I got in a good word for drilling automation tests, too ;-). When Martin visited Ames, I got 5 minutes to brief HORSE, crammed in among two dozen others funded by his office at NASA HQS. Here... we had over an hour of attention, two from Grunsfeld.

It was good to see John again, it has been over a year (since he took the chief scientist's job in Washington, actually). He became enthusiastic... wants to come up to Devon Island this summer, along with 2-3 other astronauts, to shift emphasis from long-duration spaceflight (a la ISS) to working out the requirements for expeditionary science (for the moon and someday Mars). We have a week to get a 5-page proposal back to him covering this field season.

Afterward, I sat down with Pascal and discussed next-steps, current Ames politics, our upcoming journal special-issues and this summer's plans. Then drove back to my hotel, spent the rest of the afternoon working on DAME paperwork and another proposal, ate leftovers for dinner (thanks, Sarah! ;) and visited [personal profile] geekchick's and C's place for an hour or so in the evening. Boxes are still evident from last month's move, but they're mostly dug out.

Today... an air traffic conference on communications and navigation systems, a DAME project telecon, more conference, then followed by a date with [personal profile] geekchick. (smile) I'd say things were going very well, except for my pollen allergies that have been triggered since arrival.

I'm sorry about the allergies.
