Today we ran experiments in the field... first, we vertically excited the extended shaft of the drill with a glued-on stinger, attached to a small shaker. That gave excellent results. We now have the compressive axial modes and frequencies and solved where the 68Hz noise was coming from (90 gear teeth, spinning at 45rpm (or times 0.75 Hz)).

Then we integrated a copy of our automation software with the drill control... and demonstrated the automation in control of the drill, doing simple up-down motions with the shaft. A year ahead of schedule... we aren't slowpokes. :).

Then we took down the site and packed the drill away at base camp. SH made a great dinner, his own homemade Indian specialties.

Today's weather featured warmer temperatures (up to 38F!) and a few sunny moments like this one when we arrived this morning:

I really like the lighting in this view southeast over the crater, towards the lake sediments...

Here's the drill without its protective blue tarp, just before we took it apart.

I put a cap on the borehole after the shaft was removed, then added a cover stone and built a small inukshuk to mark the location. Here's a drill team photo at the end.

See the short Inuit guy on the far left? That's SA, our deputy camp manager and a Canadian Forces Ranger... he had a toothache Tuesday night. So he took pliers and pulled it. In his tent... said that it felt much better by the next morning. Ow... friendly, smiling, tough guy.

And finally, a view across the main camp, walking up the path from personal tents. From right to left, there's the urine drums with funnel, the distant Mars Society hab, the potty tents in from of the Fortress rock, the wooden shower stall, the long kitchen/dining tent where they are just starting to show "Ice Age", the front door of a smaller white tent where I'm currently sitting, the new wooden "core module" with portholes, and a brown science/medical tent where Vicky and Pascal hang out.

*shakes head*

That was so screaming to be taken out of context.....

(grin) Hey, it was accurate... I was bored.

Since you've wrapped with the drilling, what's up next?
