Yesterday my last birthday present -- an Apple Airport wireless base -- arrived. This unit has firmware and ports for both a networked USB printer and audio output for playing music wirelessly on our stereo from any computer in the house. Great... except those are incompatible uses, IMO. I haven't seen anyone with a printer mounted in their stereo rack, or an expensive sound system inside their computer systems closet...

Now, I have a 750 word abstract to write in two hours, kids to feed, 2 meetings at work this afternoon and have to get the house cleaned before [profile] patgreene gets home tonight.

They would seem a bit incompatible in theory, yeah. In practice ... well, there's a coffee table that's currently acting as our "stereo rack" in the sense that it's where the stereo is currently sitting, and the printer is also sitting on it. And some friends of mine with notably less clutter (but a similarly small apartment) also have their printer on a desk that's only about six feet from the stereo rack, and I'd think the cables would certainly stretch that far.

Good luck with your abstract-writing and kid-feeding and meetings and house-cleaning!

Hmm... bigger house here, so the printer's in a different room.

The abstract is done, and Pat's home...

Actually, somebody recently produced a colour printer with a bezel and form factor intended to fit in with a home entertainment system. I forget who.

I remember rack-mounted printers, but they were dot matrix impact types that used rolls of computer paper...

4.16 WPM is something even your typing speed can manage. Assuming, of course, that its merely the "committing to paper" part that you need to do, not the "draft and revise" angle.

As for the airport, isn't the point of iTunes so you can replicate your CD collection in the room with the computer?

draft and revise, too... I finished it around 1pm.

And iTunes is useful for playing and organizing my music, as much as storage.

I've got an Airport Express, too (it just arrived last week). It's working beautifully but it's not in an area where I can attach it to a printer or stereo. Luckily (unluckily?), I have neither a stereo with an input jack nor a printer.

no inputs at all, not even RCA plugs (typically red and white)? Otherwise, the throughput and small size and signal strength are all good features so far...

It's an old ghettoblaster that I bought as a teenager. No inputs at all. One of these days I'll upgrade to something a little newer, but I am reluctant as my machine has fairly good sound.
