After a couple of false starts, we finally left Mountain View around 3pm. 320 miles later, we're in Yreka, CA, about 20 miles short or the Oregon border. The van wallows a bit, but otherwise has done beautifully.

Today has reminded me several times of a trip last year with [personal profile] geekchick... driving up 505 reminded me of sitting next to her in the convertible last year on the same route. Passing a small state park on the Sacramento River where she and I had lunch. The turnoff from I-5 towards Chico... (fond smile).

And then our dinner stop was in the town of Mt. Shasta, where Cathy's aunt lives (and used to be the mayor ;). Her aunt met us for dinner in Chico last year... I like meeting the blood-relatives and other family of my sweeties. I called her when we arrived, but they were apparently out... we stopped for dinner at a popular seemingly-misspelled Italian restaurant (the Piemont) with 5-course meals for about $12/person. Good stuff, and later someone who looked identical to her aunt came into the restaurant with a bearded guy. She looked at me curiously a couple of times. I nearly went over, but the kids were being disruptive...

Tomorrow... up early (6am) and on the road to Seattle (well, Woodinville). 7.5 hours driving without stops, probably 12 if we go by Mt. St. Helens on the way.

If you can take the time Mt. St. Helen's was a good stop when we did the trip a few years ago.

Let's see. . . Brian? Rocks? But would that really pique his interest? ;)

(grin) yes, we made a stop there yesterday. Awe-inspiring, literally. More basalt than I expected, actually... I would have figured on andesite and rhyolites, plus the usual pumice and ash layers.

Hee! It wasn't this bearded guy, was it?

Well... actually, he looked a lot like him, except the guy in the restaurant had more grey...

Well, those pictures are several years old. I'm sure that was them.

You're in my home turf! I grew up near Redding, but was conceived in Modoc County, and in the home in which I grew up, we had views of both Lassen and Shasta. My godparents lived near Yreka, so we visited there at least one Sunday a month for after-church break-your-fast.

It was beautiful, yesterday morning... sunny, bright, with excellent views of both mountains.
