I've got a cold, haven't had breakfast yet, and am generally cranky... the past two days haven't helped.
Right off the plane Thursday with 2 hours sleep, I had to give a half-hour talk to my management, who were trying to impress visitors from JPL. Plus meetings with JL. Then in the evening, the small 12" Powerbook server laptop wasn't ready at the repair shop... logic board failure. One frigging year plus eight days, so out of warranty. Two days to repair. So I went to Fry's, to exchanged my dead GPS (SD needs to take one back to the Arctic, this month) and buy a new server and some cellphones for use in Spain. Out of stock on the laptop. And then the saleswoman claimed that a phone was triband GSM that turned out to be US dual-band. So now I have $1200 of phones and accessories to return today.
Steve D. is going to Spain on Tuesday -- I had to get a configured laptop server plus wireless base and repeaters to him, labelled and with written setup instructions, by 6pm Friday before he left the office. 10am telecon with JL and NASA-Glenn. Then to the Apple retail store with
patgreene over lunch. Bought a new machine, took it home, loaded
hopeforyou's files and the MARTE files on it, set up user accounts, then used our DSL feed to set up two Airport Express units to auto-configure themselves once plugged in in Rio Tinto. And got the procedures written and delivered with it.
Then, working through dinner, I sent out email to Spain, bought four different cellphones online for Tuesday delivery, balanced my Government monthly credit card statement (!), and dived into playing travel agent. Cancelled
geekchick's ticket (sigh), issued
dawnd's ticket in its place, issued
patgreene's mother's ticket (arrives this Wednesday), changed her sister's ticket (arrives Saturday), and picked up
hopeforyou's ticket locator. Then jumped back and forth between all of their records, using my special access in Continental's online reservations website to move them all into the front reserved-coach seats and (where relevant) group together in adjacent seating. And book a Madrid-area hotel, same as Jen's. Then home at 10pm and late pizza and play with Pat before crashing.
Today... I wonder how I'm going to pull this one off. On multiple levels... I have to get a proposal rolling for a $40M project, before I leave in six days. I have to write up our daily test plans, for the 7 people I'll have there. I need to give Pat and Dawn some ideas of where to go, and when (heh). I love them both, but Pat will be sensitive to feeling left out and overlooked, and also Dawn and I have a weird, complex relationship. Hopefully, they will cover each other to some extent :). I expect to be too busy work-wise to be able to be very present there emotionally. They've been warned... And I still need to get satellite coordinates to CAB, set up a firewall tunnel there, and ask if we can find room to sprawl and set up tables and a tent in a field near their buildings. Oh, and the remote operations project account is empty (HC decided to send a student intern with us, which emptied it) so I'm charging all of this equipment to my DAME project instead... I just ordered 4 SIM cards to be picked up in Madrid in a week.
Off to return the wrong cellphones to Fry's, in Campbell... then I need to finish building a kitchen cabinet which is in pieces on the walkway. *That* cabinet from IKEA...
Pat is stressing because the house is a mess and her mother arrives in 4+ days... sigh.
