My old Verizon phone is back in service, the Treo 650 is going back to Sprint... Verizon claims they'll have them as of May 1, so I'll revisit it then.

Hmm... the Treo 600 keyboards are IMO a bit chickly, but the 650's have a better feel. The 650's memory-management issues are supposedly fixed in the last OS release. Software-wise... it's a PalmOS device, so I would think that there'd be a wide selection?

From both my office and my house, I'm in roaming (at $1.75/min)... with Verizon, I often have to stand at the end of my driveway, but at least I get their network.

I mean problems like "phone rings, you're immediately disconnected every single time you try to pick up, regardless of network signal strength" and being on your third unit in some reasonably short period of time, not so much "I don't like the keyboard". Of the three coworkers who have Treos (650s, I think), apparently none of them are completely happy with them. Can't generalize too far from that, of course, but it's a datapoint.

I actually get much better Sprint coverage (everywhere I've been) than I ever did with Verizon, but maybe they've improved since I switched away from them. I'm debating moving over to Cingular once I get a better look at their coverage map; the only real reasons I'm sticking with Sprint are 1) laziness and 2) friends with free calls between Sprint PCS phones. Treos or the equivalent hold at most zero appeal to me, so their availability isn't much of an issue.

I don't know what was going on with Sprint... perhaps they have a better national network, but I just happen to work and live in two gaps in their coverages.

Being on a third unit quickly could be a problem, as I travel a lot and I need a degree of ruggedness in a phone *or* PDA. Given one-fingered typing, I might go almost as fast on that keyboard as on a standard-sized PC keyboard ;).

Still, 3/5 of the coworkers in your office having them is a surprisingly high percentage...

C.'s coworkers, not mine. And one guy is apparently on his third piece of hardware in something like two weeks. I highly doubt that's typical though, or else they'd never sell any.

C. just got a Sidekick, which might be appealing if I had any desire for something like that.
