I'm sheepish... I nearly forgot to call my mom in Atlanta, and didn't get her until after 11pm there. But I did a good job with [profile] patgreene today... the kids and I made her breakfast, I got up early (7:30am) to take James in for rehearsal, got everyone to church, and afterward while Pat took Kevin to a matinee the rest of us cleaned under and removed the old sofa and futon, down to scrubbing the stained linoleum. Then I brought in her dinner (take-out from Hobee's).

And then brought in new living-room furniture. [personal profile] tenacious_snail came over and helped me rent a cargo van, then we drove to San Mateo and picked up the leather sofa I'd bought last weekend. Then a walnut bookshelf headboard for Pat's bed, while Pat was off getting her hair redone. Tonight I assembled a lounge chair that I've had in storage, and now the living room is beginning to look nice. My gift to Pat, in appreciation for the mother that she is to our kids, as well as the support she gives me :).

I thought about asking you about your mother, but somehow got sidetracked from it, I think because I wanted you in the look on the harm-reduction conversation I had with James. Glad she did get a call from you.

Thanks -- that was illuminating, and something that [profile] patgreene and I discussed over dinner last night...

I did *not* get the impression that he was personally curious or experimenting, but just that, well, he's aware of what was going on. I definitely saw my role as helping out his friends, not him personally.

He's really glad to have non-mainstream parents, and really appreciates that.

He's also going through some hormonal crud (and I noticed incipient acne yesterday), and I think might enjoy/benefit from, a better understanding of the chemistry of adolesence (that is, how all the hormonal changes and growth spurts and such affect things like his coordination, need to sleep more, and why concentrating can be difficult). I almost wonder if there is a Molecules of Emotion for teens.

I'm very glad that he feels that he can ask you openly about topics that might be too embarrassing (at this stage) for him to ask Pat or myself. Having a trusted adult information source improves everyone's safety, IMO. He continues to impress me with his common sense and relative maturity, too. :) Now, if only he could get his Geometry grade up...

How lovely. Much pampering for Pat. THAT'S the way Mother's Day should be. You did the day proud.
