Today we started drilling... with all of the diagnostic software online. Which went well.

Here we are, at the drillsite next to the work tent in a group photo:

And here's our drilling site:

Drilling began this afternoon:

This evening, we went back to the drillsite after dinner, to continue work. It was clear.. beautiful views into the crater, like this shot towards the center:

And here's a clear shot at the midnight sun in the north, showing the distance above the horizon:

And some struggling Arctic flowers:

Tomorrow: more drilling, hopefully a shower.

I think that the crater photo is one of the prettiest ones I have seen of things up there. Thank you. Midnight sun photo is also appreciated.

One of the surreal bits I notice is when I am talking/IMing with you when it is full dark *here* and yet two hours later there. I know, that is true for like 8 hours a day, but it still makes me go "wow!"

Incidentally, LOTS of folks last night were asking me about you, about your work, etc. I also happened to notice the spot where I first kissed you (from CalTrain).

I would love to paint the flowers that are seemingly growing out of the rock, but when I try to enlarge them enough to get some detail I lose them. Could you e-mail me one. And let me know if you would like a painting. Also the crater is beautiful and I would like to do it as well.

Love you Mom
