Decompression time...

Well, it worked. Last Friday afternoon, despite a week of sudden changes in network protocols, Legionnaire's Disease and a simulator shutdown, we brought panoramic images back from a remote ATV via wireless connection and displayed them on 15' wrap-around screens in a VR simulator facility. The same as we need to do from Devon Island, in a month's time, except lacking the intermediate satellite connection.
There were tense moments... even Friday afternoon, I wound up in a shouting match outside the building with one particularly panicky-overcontrolling staff member, who refused to listen to instructions. It takes *a lot* before I resort to profane language.... folks came running outside in case we were about to come to blows. But all was forgiven by the end of the day, 7pm... success does that (grin). A relaxed Friday-night date (and mutual backrubs) with B was just what we both needed to decompress after stressful weeks... she's gone back up to Oregon now.
Yesterday afternoon,
patgreene and I went over to
rmjwell and RA's anniversary party... relaxed and lots of fun. And again probably 20 LJ folks there... I got to meet
zyxwvut for the first time, saw
firecat for the first time in a long while, and spend awhile in pleasant conversation with
zebraartist,
lysana (who wasn't well but gamefully showed up anyway) and Bob. My strawberries and various dipping substances were gone in 20 minutes :-). And
patgreene was fascinated with
gridlore, who was at the center of discussion in the living room... asking me various background questions later... he's not David, in any case (grin).
Then Pat and I went out to dinner for some one-on-one time before retrieving our kids from the sitter... life does not scrape at the moment (smile).
Today, more cabinet refinishing, then pack my tent and personal gear for the Arctic, then in to work again this afternoon (disassembly and packing and writing-up kits and manifests). We'll probably truck everything to Toronto, then charter an airplane to haul our gear and equipment to Resolute. So I'll have fewer rucksacks and boxes when passing through Edmonton, this year :-).

Date: 2002-06-23 01:22 pm (UTC)Yay! Yes, it did indeed work. We'll need to figure out how to set things up so the correct images are piped to the wrap-around screens and the monitors, and not get 2 panoramas -- but I'm sure that won't be too difficult.
I'm so relieved that all the devices worked the way they were meant to...that was making me a tad nervous.

*sigh* I'm so sorry you had to deal with that situation. And yes, I understand feeling that urge to resort to profane language with that individual. I think you are incredibly professional in addressing his issues as far as I have experienced -- there are so many times during a meeting that I want to restrain him with a gag order.
But all was forgiven by the end of the day, 7pm... success does that (grin).
Thank heavens for that! Let's hope that the success continues. =)

Fresh strawberries and dipping substances? Darn. I'm sorry I missed you both, strawberries or not --
life does not scrape at the moment (smile).
Indeed. *enigmatic smile back*

Date: 2002-06-24 12:01 am (UTC)I expect that more surprises are lurking, somewhere.... but I'm optimistic overall. Divide-and-conquer... now that the hardware interfaces are defined and demonstrated (and frozen...) the problem reduces to a software implementation for known hardware. Much less of a moving target...
I want to restrain him with a gag order
Imagine being stuck with him, when nothing is working, in a tent in a 2-day snowstorm. Where's Kryten?
clairaide and I were there between 4:30-6:00 or so.
(snaps fingers) oh well, we were there from 6:30-8:30... got to see
*enigmatic smile back*
