I'm going to Amsterdam tomorrow (Friday), arriving mid-afternoon, and will be on my own until at least late tomorrow night or Saturday morning. I hadn't brought any of my guidebooks, as I'd assumed that I'd be with a former resident. Does anyone have suggestions? I could try to make it to one of the museums before closing, then wander around the central canals for awhile... ?

Museums are good fun. I like wandering. I'm hesitant to make most of my top-of-my-head suggestions, cause they're mostly the things I was hoping to show you on Saturday. What do *you* want to do or see?

How do you feel about getting up st00pid early on Saturday morning to hit the flower markets at Aalsmeer? I've tried before, and failed to be early enough, and I bet our hotel would know how to get to them at the right time. I also want to end up in the centrum in time to manage the ecomarkt, if it's possible. Hrm. I need to talk to Kathleen, Sarah and you at some point today, try to firm things up. Pulled in 12 directions while being nibbled to death by cats.

Also.. I'm leaving the car at the airport, right? Silly me, was seeking rides to Sevilla.

I may hit the Rijksmuseum, if only because it can't be covered in an afternoon anyway...

If you like his work, the Van Gogh Museum is fabulous. I also wandered a bit in the nearby Rijksmuseum, but I'm not into the Renaissance stuff quite as much. I just loved wandering the city with the camera and marveling at the canals and architecture.

The hotel is literally next door to the Van Gogh museum... that should be easy.

Get off the central canals. Watch out for pickpockets in the red light district. The "pussen boot"(?) lit: Pussy in boat, is a houseboat with rescued cats in it and you can go and pet them. Its near downtown. Farther afield is the Houseboat Museum, which is pretty cool. But then, I like boats. The canals are great.

Oh, you might as well take one of the boat tours. You'll see lots that way.

Heh. In the red light district, I would have assumed something other than cats...

I would recommend both the Van Gogh and the Rijksmuseum. Also, if you're at all interested in World War II history and how people deal with occupation, check out the Resistance Museum.
