shifts in places

Last Thursday I took over mission operations responsibility from HC, who was returning to the US after 3 weeks. This meant that I was both the liaison to the science team, as well as having to plan and balance the needs of different instruments and their support staff. And working late hours -- until 2am Thursday, until 3am Friday night.

At the same time, [personal profile] tenacious_snail was finishing her visit... we had a lovely weekend.

Friday morning, it was regretfully time to say farewell to [personal profile] karenbynight, as she dropped off [personal profile] sarahh for her weekend flight to London and then herself drove back to Madrid and returned home:

The four of us in 4B were no more, as such...

Les took the opportunity to spend most of the day either up at the drillsite (shown here) with me, or exploring Rio Tinto.

After Friday's late night at work, I had no compunctions about taking a break for the weekend. Les and I slept in a bit, then drove off for southern Andalucia and Gibraltar. Southeast of Sevilla, we spied a lonely castle, and pulled off to explore it:

Later we had a bad lunch in Ronda...beautiful whitewashed town, but it didn't work for us. One jarring note was an exhibition of torture and execution equipment in the cathedral ("Making Martyrs")... rather than be inspired by past martyrs, I kept thinking of the Inquisition:

Les wanted to get wet in the Mediterranean, so we stopped at a beach north of Gibraltar...

After a long wait for the border crossing (aircraft on the runway, the entrance road is closeds during takeoffs and landings), we went into the UK... it seemed odd to understand signs again. Even the "Look Left" at pedestrian crossings, which amused Les. And no mas jamon... for me, fish-and-chips and a pint of bitter for dinner.

Before heading into Tarifa overnight, we went out to the end of Europe -- Europa Point -- and watched the sun set in the west over the Atlantic. Here's a icon-worthy photo of the two of us, happily gazing:

What a beautiful shot of the two of you - yes, do make an icon from it!

Nice photos.

Hey, isn't that the same beach which Great Britain accidentally invaded a few years ago? The Royal Marines were doing exercises at Gibraltar, went off course a few hundred meters, and stormed the wrong beach. Needless to say, the tourists were surprised.

if it was just east of Gibraltar, then yes.
