CFC results

Based on the charity poll results, these were designated under my Combined Federal Campaign payroll checkoff for next year:

Habitat for Humanity International
Planned Parenthood - World Population
Autism Society of America Foundation
NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation
America's Second Harvest
Girl Scouts of Santa Clara County
Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice

Additional charities, from suggestions/write-ins made:
First Book
Heifer International
Diabetes Transplant Fund
Southern Poverty Law Center

These received pledges of varying amounts up to $170, all got at least $50. I found it interesting that, say, the Cato Institute (right-wing thinktank) was eligible, while the ACLU or the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty weren't on the list... Thanks to those who provided suggestions and inputs.

An aside: Cato is more capital-L-Libertarian than "right", currently against the
war in Iraq, arguing against the abolition or weakening of Miranda Rights, arguing against the War on Drugs, and taking the GOP to task for excessive spending.

Not that that changes your point one bit. (I don't know if this explains the differences you saw in the list, but one difference I can see between CATO and the other two organizations you list is that the other two directly lobby Congress, if I recall correctly. *shrug*)

This post caught my eye as I glanced through tshuma's friendslist, because the ACLU thing rang a bell in my head. The ACLU and some other groups don't accept donations through the Combined Federal Campaign because of this (http://www.aclu.org/SafeandFree/SafeandFree.cfm?ID=16239&c=206). (Mentioning it just as the answer to the mystery - I don't want to imply in any way that you shouldn't donate through CFC.)

Apologies for butting in on a stranger's journal - though if I'm getting my social contexts correct, I think we were introduced at a DHP once or twice as fellow MIT alumni.
