Well... the bad news is that one of the projects I'd hoped would carry on through the next three years is being closed down by February... leaving me with one active project and three close-outs. The good news is that I found my carry-over funds and have enough to keep things going another 2-3 months even without the arrival of 2006 funding. Which should arrive soon... still, unless one or more of these proposals gets selected, I'm going to be looking for vacancies in other projects for myself, beginning in summer.

I'd like to hear more about this-- offline if you prefer-- but I am glad to see that you are feeling calm, in any case.

Hi Brian I have been reading you lately and know you have been very busy.

I am sorry you have three close out projects, that does not sound very good, glad you are calm and sound very optimistic and I hope one of proposals gets selected :) funds are a *good thing* to have.

Are you ready for Christmas yet? Nosey Nancy here. I saw you were going to host an ice skating party. I remember fondly ice skating at Gleason park growing up :) now I could not ice skate at all, sometimes I can barely walk, and that makes me sad.

Ow... not being able to walk is sad. (hug)

All I can do is send in proposals, look for other projects and expect that things will work out, somehow. Fretting won't improve my chances... (wry grin).

Ack. That is crummy news. I wish you best of luck in getting something to bridge. I can offer some listening, if you wish.

I may lose my autonomy next year, if nothing else... thanks.

Aiee! Which programs are which, I wonder? (You don't need to say, I'm just being nosy.)

The MARTE and MUM drilling projects ended their normal 3-year duration in September, and close-out funds will be gone soon (as expected). The unexpected change was that the new lunar regolith prospector, CRUX, had survived a 50% and then another 80% downselect to be approved for continuation. But it had to be combined with three other approved projects under the Exploration Office... one of the other PIs got himself appointed the Exploration Office responsible manager in this area, then (despite conflict of interest) resurrected his losing project and only gave token support (5% or so) to the other projects, including CRUX.

Well, frack! It sucks when politics outweighs science.

(nods) it isn't dire for me yet, but could be in another 6 months.

Hugs, sympathies, and hope alternative funding sources come through. Which project got closed down?

The lunar resource explorer prototype, CRUX, was technically superior but outflanked politically by its JSC-based rival. So the work is going to Houston...

Just curious, what funding agencies are you applying to? I'm getting very interested in this sort of thing, since it looks like I'm going to be writing some grant proposals of my own very soon.

These are NASA public calls for proposals... I'm competing with universities and other labs.
