interesting coincidence...

Emails received within 15 minutes: one is from Pascal, showing photos of heavy polar bear damage to a couple of HMP structures on Devon Island (*huge* snow drifts, too...). The second is regarding re-upping for the wild animal defense (firearms self-defense) class, in April...

Wow... You sure do have some interesting work dilemmas!

You mean marauding wild beasts aren't common in most workplaces?

[identity profile] cyan-blue.livejournal.com 2006-02-28 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's fairly rare that I get them in mine nowadays... ;-)

Oh my. I'm slightly scared to ask, but I'd be curious to see the photo.

I'll post it after I get settled tonight.

Yeah, he told me that we can't count on any of the food inventory and should plan to start from scratch.

But hey, maybe we can avoid tang ;)

If anything survived, it will be the Tang and the 5-year-old orange snack crackers...

My view is, and will continue to be until I'm actually starving, that those aren't *food*.

Support your right to arm bears!

:-)

As long as I'm packing something with more stopping power, perhaps... heh.

So you're trained to kill polar bears if they attack?

[identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com 2006-02-28 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trained to try to frighten them away, if spotted at a distance. If at close range, or if one charges, I'm trained to place center-body shots with a large-caliber rifle (say, .45-70) or a 12-gauge shotgun using slugs. But we have to then pay a mandatory $25K fine for killing a bear, unlike the Inuit locally... so the joke there is that if anyone has to kill a bear, then Samson (local guide and asst. camp manager) did it, by definition...

Wow! Your job takes you some really neat and strange places.

I wish I could take the defense class with you - I imagine the material is valuable and from a really good perspective.

Hugs, but not the bear hug kind. Hee. hee.

[identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com 2006-02-28 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Gentle hugs from you are most appreciated. :)

You would be interesting to watch, in that class. A different form of self-defense...
