Some photos from the three-day class taught by the US Geological Survey, which included lots of firearms... although we also learned how to avoid and discourage bears, and practiced with nonlethal deterrents (pepper spray, noisemakers) as well.
Here's a photo of
sarahh, practicing slinging and unslinging with her 12-gauge shotgun at the outdoors range on Monday. She is prepared, here... field-ready condition, and with her safety glasses and hearing protection on.

Here I am Monday, bringing out my firearm of choice (shotgun, short stock) still in its gun case prior to exercises. We'd just finished working with .45-70 rifles (hence the spent brass on the ground).

Yesterday, we were drenched in heavy rains... just as we did our "final exam", which was timed marksmanship on the range, and a "brush run" traverse in search of our "missing partner Tom, two hours late", involving situational assessment, safe carrying and engaging several targets hidden in the woods.
Here's our class, about to head to the brush run from the range. We still had another four hours to go, at this point. Pockets are full of ammunition, I probably had 50 shells in my pockets. OTOH, conditions in summer in the Arctic can be similar.

And another view of
sarahh, intent on her timing test (instructors are behind her with a timer).
