I've been a bit reluctant to write, lately, in part because I feel like nothing stressful or weird or interesting is going on. I feel like there's nothing to describe that others would wish to read, and nothing that I feel compelled to record for myself.

That said... what *has* happened? Lots of time spent reading 1800s maps of Mountain View and studying local history, for a geocache that [personal profile] cyan_blue and the kids and I deployed last weekend. I had to move it to another corner of its park, as it was deemed too close to another (currently missing) cache. I was amused that tony, upper-class Atherton nearby got its start as the farming community of... Searsville.

At work, I've been mostly listening to telecons for various proposals, and spending time reading papers and books on ground vehicle theory and lunar soil models, in preparation for a trade study to recommend between wheels, tracks and legs for moving heavy landers and other objects around on a future lunar outpost.

Monday night, I helped [profile] patgreene improve her bedroom, putting up tall bookshelves which flank her headboard, with a bridging lightbar overhead. It looks good and matches well with the architecture.

Socially... after my weekly call to [personal profile] geekchick on Tuesday, had a nice Mediterranean dinner with [personal profile] tenacious_snail. Wednesday lunch was a chance to rebuild bridges with [personal profile] runeshower, and [personal profile] sarahh fed me delicious habanero chocolate mousse at Sunset and Port that evening. Yesterday I put the Mustang's top down , enjoyed the sunshine and drove across the bay for lunch with [personal profile] dawnd, who wore a dark jumper-style dress and looked great in the convertible. Then stole a kiss from [personal profile] cyan_blue on my way back to work, only to get more from her when she stopped by my house for a late snack after her work. And saw the end of Kevin's Little League game, after my work.

Today... more lunar motion studies, check on the drilling, lunch with [personal profile] tenacious_snail and probably over to Wine and Song tonight.

I like these "what's up" posts... it's sweet to look back and reminisce on the week's events as seen through your eyes, and I learn a few things about you that I didn't know before. It can be a useful thing to mark life's good and peaceful times too, to keep as happy memories.

When I worked on my senior environmental studies project (historical analysis of 8 south bay wet lands sites), I spent many hours pouring over topographic maps (from 1850s to 1997), cadastral maps, and aerial photos (from 1930s to 1997) to track the salt pond to landfill to wetland (or other) progression. Many hours were spent at the USGS Library in Menlo Park looking over those records in order to put together my report which would ultimately provide additional background material for the Burrowing Owl study my Professor was working on.

Hmm... were most of your materials available at the USGS library?

Yes, almost all of the materials I used were from the USGS library in Menlo Park. Librarian Michael Moore was a great help.

I believe there may have been some T-sheets available as well if I'd done some more digging, but for my project the topos and aerials were sufficient. Note on the aerial photographs from the 1930s: most are limited to areas near or above agricultural areas of the time since they were been taken by the Department of Agriculture.
