Frustrated despite good weather

I'm frustrated and a bit down. While today's online interactions (or lack thereof, in some cases) has left me feeling a bit down and withdrawn, the day just didn't go well.

We were delayed getting out to the drill site by an earlier-than-expected aircraft arrival. Then went out, put up the drill, laid out electrical and data cables and began integrating and testing the project hardware and software. We drilled through the PVC casing down to the permafrost below. I went back to base camp to retrieve SH, who had arrived on the earlier airplane... waited... waited, as he was in the medical tent. Turns out he was there just having coffee with the MD and we could have left 45 min sooner. I was just too polite, waiting outside.

Arriving back to find a software impasse... two laptops with different software could no longer communicate. The rest of the team sat and waited for a couple of hours while the two people involved tried to debug... even trying to consult [personal profile] dangerpudding over the radio (bad idea, it was dinner and the radio was on speaker). Eventually I called a halt for the day, and they brought the machines back to try to debug offline. Hopefully we won't be too delayed in the morning. Dinner was chicken and... brussels sprouts. Er. I went back to the comms tent and snacked on chocolate squares that I'd gotten from [personal profile] dawnd.

And things aren't going well at home, and various folks are either sending me angst or fluff or just not responding much... at the same time, I'm lonely and tired and sore and cold and a bit down. Probably whiny-sounding, sheesh. Not a good day, other than the weather. And getting to talk to newbies about the formation of the hydrothermal vents near the fallback breccia...

This morning, the drill was taken out of its long crate and bolted to its support platform. Initial connection and tests followed.

The testing setup inside the tent. The GT laser vibrometers are taped to a borrowed tripod (theirs hasn't arrived yet in Resolute).

Weather was at least good today... mostly sunny and 38-42F. Here's a photo of our drilling test camp, looking eastward into the center of the crater. Note the grey fallback breccia material and periglacial features (patterned ground).

But things are getting better at home... I made it back home, and the Mustang is okay, more or less. *hugs*

I love looking at your pictures. I was sitting in COalinga (106 in the shade) wishhing I could be up there with you : )

Sorry to have missed you tonight. My net connection at home was down again, between about 7:30 or 8 and roughly 2 AM, so no IM for me tonight. =/

Dinner won't always be non-Jay food. Really. ;)

I haven't seen Tang, scorched muffins, or canned peas show up on the menus yet, so I suspect the food situation is probably pretty darn good overall. ;)

she even told me that there no cream of mushroom soup in the camp at all.

Actually, I'm sure the food is great. Considering that you've never (as I understand it) cooked for that many people on your own, it sounds to me like you're doing a fabulous job. You're not always going to know what everyone likes and you'll get better as you go along. *hugs*

I'm sure they're appreciative of having food at all if I recall how bad the food supposedly was last year.

note to self: optimists share angst as a way to lighten its load and be relieved of it. pessimists who are given angst will fret about it and see it as a problem.

I'm trying to build as secure, stable, and functional of a network of friends, family, and lovers as I can. Sometimes, I fuss about trying to get it *just right*.

Glad to see the drill is out and getting set up.
