Thursday I went with [profile] patgreene and [personal profile] tenacious_snail to see the Indigo Girls in SF... it was a group outing for Les's birthday. I first saw the Indigo Girls when they had just graduated and were playing in the Emory University student center in Atlanta in 1984. 17 people in the audience, then...

Friday was a holiday, so I stayed home and worked on kitchen renovations. Friday night I went to Wine and Song with the kids, and socialized. Saturday morning I dropped off James for his garage-band rehearsal (concert that night) and I had a nice brunch with Les and [profile] pusifoot and [profile] _counterculture, worked on grouting slate tile as a kitchen backsplash, took the two youngest out with [personal profile] cyan_blue to see "Flushed Away", then Geri and I went to a local private party. I stretched a couple of my edges, but the evening was drama-free. ;) Overnight with Geri, then back home around noon and watched the kids and did more kitchen renovation (slate tile sealant, lots of fumes) while Pat went out.

I went out with [personal profile] tenacious_snail last night, had Thai food... Thai Basil in Sunnyvale gave us atrocious service, and rushed us out the door before they officially closed at 9pm. I won't go back there anytime soon. We went back to Les's place, I was sitting listening to her talk on happily about [profile] baiku and others, and I nodded off... wound up napping there for 2 hours while Les was online or worked on laundry. Not exactly a hot date, and Les was understandably frustrated.

OTOH, I was under-slept, tired, and was coming down with a cold...

Out of curiousity, which Thai Basil in Sunnyvale? Was this the Murphy Street restaurant or the one in the Town and Country center?

This was the larger, Town and Country location. They were open until 9pm on Sunday... we arrived at 8:10pm... they were curt, interrupted us to tell us that we had to pay right away (at 8:40, just after the food arrived), and literally hit us with cleaning spray from the next table over, loudly stacked chairs nearby and ran a shopvac behind us until we finally gave up. Others had already departed. They were successful in their goals... we left at 8:55pm and were the last customers out. Needless to say, the tip was minimal.

If you don't take care of yourself and meet your own needs, you can't continue to meet the needs of others.

If you're tapped out, you won't have anything to give.

I know that if constant exhaustion and spaciness and such are a constant problem for weeks or months at a time, I'd start thinking about depression or illness - at this time of year, SAD can be an issue, also. I know I need to be spending some time every morning cuddling the lightbox. OTOH, if someone's having an off week, is getting sick, didn't sleep well... these things happen.

I know self-care never makes your top ten list, but perhaps it's time for that to change?

If you don't take care of yourself and meet your own needs, you can't continue to meet the needs of others.

The trap here is that that's true *in the long term*, but it is perfectly possible to deprioritize one's needs and wants in the short and medium-term while still giving to others. Until burnout finally sets in...

The other issue for me is that I forget what I should be doing for self-care, other than things like flossing my teeth and getting regular exercise. :)

When do we get to see a photo of the slate, btw?

When it is finished, in a couple of weekends more? Actually, I'm thinking of having a "kitchen-warming" sometime in February, which should be about the time that the whole renovation project is finally done (after 5 years!)...
