Slow weekend...

After last week's work rush, this weekend is a bit like landing in a sand pit... few features, slower moving. It's a slow weekend in part because most local friends and partners are off at big weekend-long events. At one event, I'd be an unwelcomed observer (at best) were I to go there, and the other excludes me because of my age. (This seems to be selectively applied, if one is a friend of the organizers.)

This has already led to drama and such with at least one sweetie thus far... at this point, I'm grumpy, and feeling like if they don't want me, I don't want them either and they can just go do... whatever to themselves. Which may be true, ironically. (wry grin)

I plan to go pull weeds and dig my garden this afternoon, have fun this evening with patgreene, then see cyan_blue for her postponed birthday date on Sunday. Nyah.

As discussed last year, should you wish to attend p-con, you would certainly not be an "unwelcomed observer." Should you WISH to attend, you'd be a WELCOMED observer, even a welcomed researcher and explorer. That assumes, however, that you had some reason to attend other than to try to convince the other attendees that they are wrong, or to spend your entire time moping about feeling "left out" because your beliefs differ. I do have to laugh a bit at the "beliefs differ" though, since, well, EVERYONE's beliefs DIFFER there--that's kinda the point. On this one, though, I essentially think that you are choosing to exclude yourself. Which is not inherently bad or wrong; I just think it's kinda rich for you to be complaining about the results of your own choice.

As to the other event--not sure what you're talking about, though by the allusion to you being "too old" I can make a guess at the general idea and possible host. ;^) I agree that selective application of such "protective standards" is quite annoying; I've seen it elsewhere as well. And yes, in this case ABSOLUTELY the best thing to do is simply not be there. In this case I think it's they who are being shortsighted at best, but if they'd rather make arbitrary rules than to be politely firm and/or help people learn better how to interact socially, well, that's their choice.

And as you can see...I'm at neither event. So you're not as left-out as you seemed to think. I hope you have been enjoying your garden; it's certainly a nice day (if you like that sort of thing ;^). And I hope you have fun with your sweeties.

Pat worked late, so we stayed in and got Chinese takeout... I suppose my views of the former event are colored by the experiences (and trauma) I've received at pagan events over the past year. I'm not one to prosetlyze, myself. At the same time, I would have been much more likely to believe I'd be a welcome observer or explorer, a year ago. Now, that seems unlikely to me.

*laughs* Yeah, I had issues with the age thing as well though I easily coule have gone if I'd brought a younger partner. The issue isn't *that* hard to circumvent - it's rather like the prom, actually.

I actually touched down for a couple of hours at a THIRD event. .. DunDraCon. It was. . . interesting. I got to see a TON of wonderful people I don't see often, which was oustanding and since I wasn't actually part of the convention I didn't feel obligated to stay long.

Eh. Easier for a woman, perhaps. I was actively discouraged from attending TNG, and I have no under-35 partners at this point.
