Dear Dr. Glass,
It is my pleasure to inform you that you have been elected to the grade of Associate Fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). AIAA Associate Fellows are individuals of distinction who have made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.

I'm a bit surprised... this was the first year I had been put up for Associate Fellow, and I really wasn't expecting it to go through the first time (especially with relatively few publications in the last couple of years). Now I'll get a pin, certificate, and a free dinner and admission on 6 Jan 2003 at the AIAA meeting in Reno. And a chance to volunteer on standards committees and editorial boards in order to be considered for Fellow-ship someday. (grin)

Otherwise... after an early (7:30am) telecon with Northrop was punctuated by a fire drill on their end, I drove to SF and picked up [livejournal.com profile] clairaide. A missed email meant that I didn't pick up a given origami book from [livejournal.com profile] brooksmoses for Rose, so she and I drove around to a couple of bookstores before going to the airport. Before she went through security, she gave me a tiny yellow origami rose (adoring look). It now sits on top of the giant 20Ma BP shatter cone on my desk at NASA.

After scrounging and pleading, I located $10K for equipment purchases and ordered a new Powerbook G4 Titanium for [livejournal.com profile] hopeforyou's lab. As well as dropping off my cellphone order, and tweaking the Northrop guys over open-architecture compatibility.

w00t!

...for finally getting a cellphone!
And the Associate Fellowship's not shoddy, either. ;^)

Heh -- it won't arrive for weeks-to-months. I merely put the order in the procurement system. And afterward, I plan to keep it mostly turned off and pretend it doesn't exist... otherwise, I'd have to check voicemail more often than twice a week.

Thanks! Merely an annual free meal and more invites to participate in society review panels, technical committees and such. And it looks nice on one's CV...

Ulp. No, I just forgot to mention it when I got home from work yesterday... (sheepish look).

Heh. Okay, I wondered why you hadn't mentioned it in earlier conversation. I don't feel so bad now. ;)

Huzah! So, what does it mean to be an associate fellow? Is it just an honor to be bestowed, or can you now do some nifty new things?

Nah... just slightly-better seating at rubber-chicken conference banquets and the like. Just another Good Housekeeping-equivalent, career-wise...
