At 7:15am this morning I got a call at home... I'm due to brief senior management at 1:30pm today on our proposed R&D plans with the FAA for giant, geographically distributed back-end data servers that would run the US air traffic control system, starting in 2008 or so.

And I hadn't started the pitch yet...

It's about half done now... time to get rolling again. 57 miles, a half tank of gas,and I need sunglasses...

It's about time

We've been hearing forever about the need to replace the computers for the US air traffic control system. So you get to be our hero, and save the world, in your own special way.

(smile) thanks... but it is hardly heroic. The eventual system would be built by the FAA in 2008-10 and would cost >US$3B. This is just a proposed R&D program that would hopefully solve the air-traffic-specific data and computing problems (those that we can't assume that industry will have addressed by then).
