A new year...
Jan. 1st, 2002 10:31 pmSpoken from Atlanta, where we arrived last evening from St. Petersburg. We hung out there at the beach and spent Sunday paying respects to the secular Mouse aka DisneyWorld with the kids. Crowded. But watching the children's faces was worth it... granted, it is living vicariously, but watching one's offspring discovering new places and experiences is for me one of the great joys of parenting. Although there are less commercial means...
Pat's family was quite civil, even friendly despite our separation and tussles in 2001. Whew. Last night my family gathered and we played board games and lit (illegal) fireworks. Tomorrow we are all headed home in the afternoon, if a forecast storm doesn't strand us here.
Otherwise...
I start this new year as a father of three children, married, polyamorous (in four ongoing relationships of various sorts, considered by me to be extended family), a middle-aged male (41) working as a scientist and project manager at NASA-Ames. Silicon Valley is my home, and I have a couple of loosely-defined groups that I view as my communities. I have an interesting job, great friends, love, faith, health, financial stability, fading red hair, a beard, and average height and weight
(although I need to lose 15-20 lbs to get to my actuarial "ideal" weight). I've made career contributions in automation, space mission design, and perhaps someday will have affected SETI, Mars exploration or air traffic control (the jury is out on those). And I'm thankful for the blessings in my life.
